I’m delighted with our win over England. I thought it was a tremendous effort. It means a lot to me and would even mean the same even if I was a player and not the captain.
We have been rewarded for our hard work. We do a lot of planning and all the guys communicate well with each other and we have a lot of discussion in team meetings about what responsibility each guy has. I think the guys now need some rest after the Ireland tour to recuperate and come out fresh for September.
Something we spoke about the night before the win at Trent Bridge was to hit the ground and be running at them from ball one, starting from the warm-up, which was tremendous. It really paid off in the end after being 1-0 down and to come back and win. It was a tremendous effort and everyone had an input in this series.
Everyone was tremendous, but Shiv was outstanding for us with the bat. Daren Powell, Ravi Rampaul and Fidel Edwards were always giving us a good start with the ball and they deserve credit, but everyone chipped in, like Dwayne Smith. Everybody played their part.
Fidel has been a real asset to us. Watching Fidel’s career over the years, I think the way he has been used wasn’t appropriate. There are times and means, you must know when to use Fidel and it depends on the situation. He is a key player for us and you need to know how to use him and use him well.
It was nice to come out of the series as a winning captain and I think I always had that (leadership ability) in me. Lots of people want to know what I’m always thinking and most people won’t know what I’m thinking most of the time but to lead these guys was tremendous regardless of the ups and downs we had.
But I’m just the back-up captain and when Sarwan comes back he is going to get the same support from the guys. A lot of people might be saying that Chris should continue as captain because we have won the series but Sarwan really deserves his chance. It wasn’t his fault he was injured.
We now move on to Ireland. There is not much time for celebrations as we have a coach to catch straight after the match from Nottingham. We might have some celebration on the bus though!
We fly to Ireland from Gatwick on Sunday, when another tour will start all over again. We can’t lose focus, we still have three more one-dayers to go in Ireland so we just want to make the best of it.
In terms of my situation with the WICB, there is a new president now so whether they will sweep it under the carpet or bring it back up in the public eye we will have to wait and see what happens.
