England’s defeated captain Paul Collingwood wants his new team to learn from their mistakes after they lost the three-match one-day series to West Indies 2-1.
West Indies, after bowling England out for 196 after scoring an imposing 289-5 from their 50 overs, went some way to avenging their 3-0 Test series loss by winning the deciding game at Trent Bridge.
Captain Chris Gayle led by example with a mature 82, Runako Morton was 82 not out and Dwayne Bravo crashed 42 from just 24 deliveries. Liam Plunkett claimed 3-59.
England were always struggling in reply when they lost their first three wickets – including the world’s number one-ranked batsman Kevin Pietersen – with just 33 runs on the scoreboard. Owais Shah top scored with 51. Daren Powell (pictured) claimed 4-40 and Fidel Edwards took 3-30.
“We would admit that we have a lot of work to do,” said Collingwood, who replaced Michael Vaughan as one-day captain last month. “This series has been an eye-opener for me. As long as we learn from this we can move forward.
“West Indies came out and played some fantastic and aggressive cricket and they deserve a lot of credit for that,” as he hinted that West Indies played as he wants his own side to play.
“What I want from my players is aggression and intensity. They are my buzz words. But it’s not going to happen overnight, it comes with confidence.”
West Indies’ caretaker captain Chris Gayle said he was “delighted” that a team effort had been rewarded with victory.
“We have been rewarded for our hard work,” Gayle told reporters afterwards. “We do a lot of planning and all the guys communicate well with each other and we have a lot of discussion in team meetings about what responsibility each guy has.
“I think the guys now need some rest after the Ireland tour to recuperate and come out fresh for September (when they play in the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup).”
England next play a Test series against India, starting on July 19, while West Indies play three more one-day internationals in Ireland.
