West Indies captain Chris Gayle ran a quick single to reach his tenth Test century in the fifth Test against England Sunday but tore his right hamstring in doing so.
The injury will be scanned and examined further by medics but the signs are that the explosive left-handed opening batsman will miss the upcoming five-match one-day series, though it would be too early to question his participation for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League starting in mid-April.
"I'm feeling good apart from the pain in my leg," Gayle told Sky Sports. "It's not too bad right now but I am going to have an MRI (scan) Monday and then we will see what's going to happen.
"When you're on 99 you always put an extra effort into that single!" Gayle said and added: "Sarwan did the job for us in Barbados and I wanted to be the one who played the big innings for the team here but I couldn't go on."
Gayle had looked in control for most of his innings despite taking a nasty blow on the shoulder from debutant seamer Amjad Khan. His bitter-sweet moment came when he clipped the ball into midwicket towards Owais Shah, whose throw at the stumps at the non-strikers end would have dismissed Gayle had he hit the timbers. Instead, Gayle reached the milestone, though only celebrated belatedly having stayed on his hands and knees in pain for the immediate moments after the run.
West Indies were 277-4 after tea and still required 70 runs to avoid the follow on. Brandan Nash and Shivnarine Chanderpaul were together.
