West Indies captain Chris Gayle said he is a doubt for Wednesday’s final World Twenty20 group match against Sri Lanka after injuring his right knee in the last match.
Destructive opener Gayle struck 88 from just 50 balls against Australia on Saturday and his innings, which included six sixes, was key in winning the game by seven wickets with almost four overs remaining. Australia were eliminated on Tuesday after they lost to Sri Lanka.
West Indies can afford to rest Gayle against Sri Lanka as they are already qualified for the next stage of the tournament.
“I’m carrying a bit of an injury and I don’t know if I might be playing yet so it’s a situation that we need to look at,” Gayle told reporters on Tuesday at Trent Bridge. “I picked it up in the last game from a ball that (Mitchell) Johnson bowled and I’m still struggling a bit with it.
“When I was batting I didn’t feel it but the next day I couldn’t walk properly and I’m just trying to get back in my stride now. The knee is swollen a lot and bruised, so let’s see what happens.”
Gayle said he will test the knee in the practice nets on Tuesday evening but he did not bat in Monday’s training session as he was feeling pain.
